David Allan Cohen, 64, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in his home, in White Oak, Silver Spring, Maryland. After a 19-month valiant fight, he succumbed to Glioblastoma/Grade 4 brain cancer.
David is survived by his wife, Laurie; his two daughters, Sarah Bracha and Toba Esther Cohen; sister, Cheryl Cohen; and mother, Mildred Cohen. He was predeceased by his father, Mr. William Cohen.
David was born on August 6, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1975 with a dual degree in Computer Science and Sociology. He moved to the Washington, DC area when he was 23, and a few years later joined MCI Telecommunications, where he worked for 13 years as Systems Analyst, Project Manager and Program Manager designing and developing financial systems, until 1995. After six years as Systems Analyst in three different consultant companies, in September 2001, just after September 11th, he was designing a system for the US Postal Service, and due to the anthrax scare, USPS resources were diverted, and once again he was out of work. He decided to change career paths and formally learn about investments, and became licensed as a Financial Planner, joining AXA Advisors in 2002. He was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), and a Retirement Planning Specialist, from Wharton Business School. He was active in the local BNI Chapter and the Chamber of Commerce.
After crossing paths with Laurie for over four years, who also worked at MCI, they met at a UJA/Jewish Federation Young Professionals event, where he was on the Board. They married in 1989, in Washington, DC. They attended numerous classes at Aish HaTorah, and became more observant in their Judaism. They moved to White Oak, Silver Spring, in 1992, and David quickly became involved with their local Orthodox synagogue, Southeast Hebrew Congregation, and helping the Jewish Community in many ways. He was the synagogue President for two (two-year) terms, the Membership Director, and then Financial Director for over 20 years. He was a member of the Chevra Kadisha, and Board member of the Yeshiva of Greater Washington and Torah School of Greater Washington. Under the guidance of Rabbi Kalman Winter, Z”L, David attended numerous Torah classes each week. David continued attending classes with the Greater Washington Community Kollel.
Over their 28 years of marriage, David, his wife Laurie, and their two daughters, welcomed over 20 high school or young adult boarders to live in their home, and hundreds of friends and other guests. David was known for his quit wit, his steadfast clarity and honesty, his veracious thirst for learning Torah, his conservative views, and his ever-present smile.
Funeral was held at Southeast Hebrew Congregation (video upon request from family) and interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi, Maryland.
